Subject Steady outflow of the most active working-age population from the northern regions leads to manpower shortage. Under these conditions, senior citizens enjoying good health and wishing to work serve as a reserve to increase the labor force. In the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in 2013 about 48.1% of pensioners were active-working. The reasons are the early age of retirement, continued employability, small pension benefits. Therefore, realization of the older generation's ability to work continues to be a relevant issue.
Objectives The study aims to review the main factors influencing the motivation of labor behavior of persons who attained the pension age.
Methods The sociological method helps disclose different aspects of motivation of the labor behavior of the older generation residing in the northern region. The survey covered the city of Yakutsk and villages of the Suntarsky district.
Results Most of the respondents believe that work is a source of their acceptable standard of living, which is not provided only by pension benefit. The study shows that the pensioners' desire to work is limited by the labor market supply, especially in rural areas. However, it is the agricultural sector, where pensioners may be involved in small business development.
Conclusions and Relevance The survey findings show that labor for the pensioner continues to be the basis of material well-being, a source of moral calmness and confidence. The offered measures will help retain and enhance a labor motivation of pensioners since they have valuable experience and practical knowledge.
