Subject In the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), under continued negative migration balance, the region's economic demands for labor may partly be satisfied by using the labor potential and boosting employment of the third age population.
Objectives The aim of the research is to analyze the increasing labor activity of the third age population.
Methods The paper reviews trends in the ageing of the population, based on statistical and sociological information under the methods of time series analysis, structural and demographic analysis. Using the sociological method, it analyzes the potential activity of senior citizens and identifies certain possibilities to expand the employment of the third age population.
Results The analysis of population census reveals differences in the impact of education levels on employment of pension age men and women in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). People of pension age have extensive professional experience and strength to continue working. The number of citizens of pension age willing to find a job and applying to employment centers for assistance is growing. The creation of new and expansion of existing jobs with flexible employment will promote using the labor potential of the third age population.
Conclusions Under conditions of ageing of the population and the labor force deficit in the regional labor market, the increase in the activity of the third age population will contribute to enhancing the living standards, extending the labor activity, and covering the growing labor shortage.
