Retail trade of Russia in today's economy

Subject The article deals with retail trade development in the Russian market. The relevance of the subject is based on deterioration of the socio-economic situation, which may change the usual positive development trends and lead to trade stagnation that is already happening in some countries.
     Objectives The aim of the study is to analyze the development of retail trade to work out mechanisms for its effective development.
     Methods On the basis of general logical methods of investigating the data of the Federal State Statistics Service, materials of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, leading rating and information agencies, and works of Russian scientists, we identified trends, problems and development prospects of the Russian retail market.
     Results We found that in 2014, retail trade continues to be one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy and the main source of GDP. The analysis of indicators characterizing the development of competition in the FMCG segment for 2014 shows that competition increases due to development of new networks of federal and international levels. We determined that Russia is a leader among European countries in terms of the number of international networks. The study reveals the heterogeneity of their presence in different Russian cities, and shows that the Russian trade dominates European countries in terms of retail trade turnover. However, in terms of shopping floor space, Russia is lagging behind, and this testifies to the existing potential for development.
     Conclusions and Relevance The study findings may serve as a basis for creating mechanisms of efficient development of retail trade in Russia and its regions.
