Importance The paper presents some results of the study of efficiency of investment in human capital of Russian youth. The relevance of the topic is irrational attachment of monetary and other tools and resources in the human capital of the modern Russian youth by all actors of the investment process, from an individual or family to the State. It is expressed in a non-optimal ratio of investment in the basic components of human capital (health, education, etc.) and the results obtained. The modern young generation is not strong enough, not professionally competent, etc. A number of socio-economic and demographic indicators shows all this.
Objectives The aim of the research was to study the real economic efficiency of investment in human capital of the modern Russian society.
Methods We have conducted a straw poll of residents of the Volgograd region which have economically dependent children between the ages of 14 to 22 years. We have analyzed the efficiency of investment in human capital of the modern Russian youth through the assessment of the ratio of invested funds and resources of the main investors in the human capital of young people and the beneficial effects of investments. A beneficial effect of such investment is considered as the economic effect, i.e. an increase of income of all actors, and the non-economic or social effect.
Results We have received representative data on the structure and volume of investment of a typical Russian family in the education of young people.
Conclusions and Relevance A typical Russian family's investment in the education of young people is significant. More than a third of parents do not count on the economic effect of such investments, and they are guided by considerations of getting meaningful and creative work for their children, prestige and comfortable working conditions. Due to this, the assessment of the effectiveness of investment in education of young people is rather difficult. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that in the territory of the Volgograd region, no integrated studies of this kind have ever been carried out. In addition, an interdisciplinary approach and the use of allied sciences' methods are quite rare in the studied area.
