Importance The subject of the research was the conditions of economic reforms in Russia and in China at the end of the 20th century.
Objectives The main task was the disclosure of the specific opportunities to use the successful experience of economic reforms in China, which can be applied in modern Russia. The greatest challenge was proof of the high priority given to the development of export-oriented sectors of the economy that, as China's economic development has proved in recent decades, can be an effective source of modernization of society.
Methods To study the issue, I used the institutional method, which allowed me to appeal not so much to the formal rules and regulations as to informal settings, which are a real source of reform in the two countries.
Results The result of the juxtaposing study is a more precise determination of primary demands of the society, which set the vector of transformations in Russia and China and the disclosure of principal (but not formal) differences in the philosophy of market-oriented reforms in the two States.
Relevance The Chinese experience of maintaining high economic growth is very important for Russia, which is currently experiencing a significant downturn, and domestic exporters, despite high prices for resources, are facing serious economic problems.
