Available online: 26 October 2014 Subject Heading: REGION'S POTENTIAL JEL Classification: Pages: 33-40
The article presents the results of the research of structural changes in the functioning of households in the Republic of Mordovia in the context of institutional transformation of the Russian economy. The core issue is a review of a household functioning from the point of view of an institutional approach. Based on this approach, I have defined the objectives and functions of the household as an institution, and analyzed the criteria to distinguish between closely related but not the same institutions, i.e. the institution of the household and the institution of the family. The basis of the research is general indicators of the structure dynamics, which are calculated according to the official data of the all-Russia population census of 2002 and 2010, as well as sample surveys of households, which are analyzed taking into account the possibilities of temporary mappings. To achieve this goal, I have conducted a structural analysis of the dynamics of household structure on the basis of the number and structure of family members, occupied housing, employment and dependency, and family unit structure, and have studied the budget of the households in the region by sources of income generation and areas of the income use. The combination of a descriptive analysis and the resulting synthesis of quantitative indicators enabled to give a qualitative characteristic of the level of structural shifts in the households' structure and changes in the budget components. It also enabled to draw conclusions about the current relationships and interdependencies in the functioning of households of the region. The results of the research can be interesting in the context of identifying the essence and regional specifics of households' institutionalization process in order to expand the information base to develop economic and social policies in the region.
