Development of domestic companies is often determined by the forces of non-local character. So there is a need to develop a method for assessing the competitiveness of companies, that more fully and adequately takes into account the peculiarities of the Russian economy. The article examines the features of the Russian business environment. It proposes an expanded understanding of competition, based on the institutional approach. The paper also explores some of the methodology for assessing the competitiveness of companies, and it substantiates the limited applicability of techniques in Russian realities.
