Article analyzed the different points of view on the substance and essence of the concept of "sustainable development", "economic growth", "economic sustainability", "sustainable economic development" and "economic security". Unsubstantiated the author's own view on the understanding of their essence, refined range of their application. Analysed different methods for evaluation of sustainable development of the region, proposed a new method of calculating the rate of its sustainable development.
