Importance This article examines the trends and current state of socio-economic development of the Volga Federal District, identifying advanced and less developed regions of the District. Objectives The article aims to analyze the current socio-economic development status of the District, considering the features and effectiveness of implementation of the Strategy of Socio-Economic Development of the Volga Federal District until 2020. Methods For the study, I used a systems approach, analysis, and synthesis. Results The study results in determining a ranking of regions of the Volga Federal District, that shows no significant changes in the development of the least developed regions of the District. This is a negative trend discrediting the Strategy 2020 realization. Also, the study of the social policy and infrastructure of the District identified certain negative trends in job creation, the spread of alcoholism and drug addiction, and low housing affordability. All this affects the level of socio-economic development of the District and the Russian Federation as well. Relevance The results of this research can be applied by the regional authorities of the Volga Federal District to improve the socio-economic situation in the regions.
