Practical aspects of the analysis of non-financial assets for impairment in crisis environment

The ongoing financial crisis is influencing the current conditions of the business of Russian and foreign companies. The sharp drop in business activity in Russia’s economy and resulting substantial contraction of the markets for different products, deterioration of the customers’ creditworthiness and lack of access to capital markets has negatively affected financial performance and financial position of the majority of companies. These conditions dictate the need for careful and comprehensive analysis of assets for impairment in crisis environment. In the present paper practical aspects of impairment analysis of non-financial assets are examined, in particular, recommendations related to identification of cash generating units are given, specifics of the calculation of recoverable amount in the crisis environment are considered, and approach towards determination of a discount rate is discussed.
