Importance The article considers the questions of the development of tourist destinations as territories that have defined boundaries and which meet the needs of a broad spectrum of tourists. We discuss the various tourist activities in terms of their relevance and ability to meet the needs of citizens in travel, recreation, perception of the world around us and other matters serving as the subject of the research.
Objective As the aim of the study we identify the most promising directions of development of tourism within the framework of the considered territorial entities.
Methods We have considered both the traditional types of tourist services, which enjoy the sustained popularity and the innovation directions of the development of tourism. The traditional types of tourist services include recreational, cultural and educational, religious and pilgrimage, business, sports and primary wellness tourism. We emphasize that at the basis of innovation, which ensures the specifics of the tourism business, lay not only the usage of the unique natural sites, but also the new facilities as well: spa treatments on the basis of thermal waters and therapeutic mud, ethnic tourism, which will be in demand by tourists wishing to visit the places where their ancestors have lived at some time in the history, etc. We have conducted a review of economic-mathematical methods that are viable to use in decision-making while choosing the tourist services, as well as while substantiating the development strategy of tourist organizations.
Results The made analysis allowed us to formulate the scientific and practical recommendations for the development of destinations to enhance the tourist attractiveness of the territories, as well as to promote the most complete and efficient use of their tourism potential.
Conclusions and Relevance We have come to the conclusion that the natural, cultural and historical diversity of Russia allows to widely develop practically all kinds of tourism, taking into account the priorities arising from the specifics of a particular destination.
