Importance The article addresses problems related to the quality of engineering education in Russia. Transition to a market economy demonstrated the failure of technical universities to produce competitive engineers for civil industries, like aircraft industry, space industry, car manufacturing, etc.
Objectives The purpose of the study is to improve the training mechanism of Russian engineers for them to work in competitive market environment.
Methods I employ the comparative analysis of various systems of engineers training in Russian and foreign technical universities.
Results The analysis shows that engineering profession is not prestigious in Russia, as it is the case all over the world. There are many reasons, like small number of professors who are able not only to teach theory, but also to lead scientific and practical work of students; undeveloped scientific and research base of technical universities; lack of competition among professors; lack of English language skills preventing from communication with foreign colleagues, etc.
Conclusions The paper presents recommendations on reforms to be implemented in the coming years to improve the quality of engineering education in Russia.
