Subject The article discusses the influence of energy saving processes on energy efficiency growth of the Russian economy under economic crisis.
Objectives The main objective of the study is to analyze waste heat generation and utilization in the economy of the Russian Federation and its eastern regions.
Methods In the study, we apply our unique methodological approach based on methods of systems analysis and energy balance.
Results The analysis shows that the most significant economic activities generating waste heat or thermal secondary energy resources (TSER) in Russia are manufacturing industries and gas transport, but the actual use of the TSER of gas pipeline transport. However, the use of these resources are inefficient. The leaders of efficient utilization of waste heat are manufacturing industries (chemical, metallurgical, and petroleum product production). They are mainly located in eastern regions of Russia, therefore, their share in TSER production is significant, though it is not so big in efficient utilization.
Conclusions We provide a list of measures to reduce heat losses and utilize TSER in the eastern regions more efficiently. If implemented, these measures will significantly improve the energy efficiency of both the eastern regions and Russia as a whole, due to more rational use of energy resources.
