Subject The article discusses the information war wages by foreign mass media against Russia. I review how the myth about Russia's alleged involvement in the U.S. domestic politics and Russian hackers originated.
Objectives The research analyzes means and technologies used to commit information assaults against Russia. I conduct a content analysis of mass media to identify the source of anti-Russian myths. I also evaluate Russia's information security and preparedness to repulse such attacks.
Methods The research relies upon the horizontal and comparative analysis of global events and content analysis of mass media. I refer to official documents and publications by the Russian foreign journalists and politicians.
Results Russia proved to be unprepared for the hybrid information war. Governmental authorities failed to ensure protection and prove that Russia was not involved in cyber attacks, and convince the global community of the absurdity of the claims.
Conclusions and Relevance Mass media exert more pressure as social ties grow, taking new forms as new technologies emerge. Russia's information security is impossible without the precise analysis and timely responses. The findings may be used to prepare general and special training courses of political science, public administration, international law.
