A methodology for evaluating the competitiveness of a banking competitive environment in Russia

Ezrokh Yu.S. Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Management, Novosibirsk, Russian Federation ( ezroh@rambler.ru )

Journal: Financial Analytics: Science and Experience, #14, 2015

Importance The research focuses on the specificity of the competition process as an economic phenomenon in a banking competitive environment of Russia.
Objectives The objective of the research is to devise the methodological basis for a quantitative evaluation of the banking competitive environment in Russia, to make approbatory calculations for determining the current level of changes and their trends as the basis for taking decisions on competition management.
Methods To determine key sources of banks' revenue and expense, I apply structuring procedures. I calculate macroeconomic competitive ability indicators of banks included into the sample, extent of statistical homogeneity of the relevant indicators and data integration in order to make a general quantitative evaluation of the competition level using my own economic and mathematical algorithm and analytic applications.
Results I formulate the methodological framework for a quantitative evaluation of competitiveness of the Russian banking competitive environment. The framework relies upon the study of homogeneity of substantial indicators reflecting the macroeconomic competitive ability of banking institutions in the banking competition, including income, cost and marginal approaches and combined methods. The above approaches and methods focus on specific rate of return, expenses and margin of banking institutions involved in the banking competition. Each approach is associated with a methodology for evaluating the competitiveness of the Russian banking competitive environment. Results of the approbatory calculation will be the basis for suggesting further measures and steps to manage and control the competitiveness of the Russian banking competitive environment in the current period.
Conclusions The estimated competitiveness of the Russian banking competitive environment appears to be not that high (especially, using the methods of cost and marginal approaches). Hence it is necessary to undertake measures for managing the competitiveness and preventing an excessive growth in the macroeconomic competitive ability of some banks that may result in monopolization.

Methodology for assessing the competitiveness of the banking environment: a marginal aspect

Ezrokh Yu.S. Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Business Administration, Novosibirsk, Russian Federation ( ezroh@rambler.ru )

Journal: Economic Analysis: Theory and Practice, #2, 2015

Subject The article studies the methodological peculiarities of quantitative analysis of competitiveness of the banking business environment.
Objectives The aim of the study is to develop methodological foundations of assessment of competitiveness of the banking environment as the extent of the objective functions of competition in banking competitive market. The tasks are as follows: to analyze the most famous foreign approaches; to define debatable provisions of the existing theories; to form a theoretical-methodological basis of assessment of competitiveness of the banking environment; to develop scientific thought of the leading scientists by establishing the author's approach; to develop an executable and adequate methodology for assessing the competitiveness and its approbation.
Methods The theoretical-methodological designs are based on the analysis and synthesis of scientific knowledge in the study area contained in the works of the leading domestic and foreign scholars. The quantitative analysis is based on the well-known economic-statistical methods, adapted to meet the challenges.
Results I have developed and justified a methodological approach to the evaluation of competitive banking environment, including the theoretical and methodological basis and methodology for a study aimed at exploring the degree of homogeneity of the marginal income of independent credit institutions. As a part of its performance, I have defined the key segments of the analysis of the net margin income per unit; introduced indicators of competitiveness of the banking environment, based on the coefficient of variation and the extent of variation; used an exponential coefficient based on reducing the influence of historical data. The methodology provides statistical grouping by priority business strategies of banks (corporate, retail, universal) with the following integration of results.
Conclusions and Relevance Based on calculations of the competitiveness of the banking environment in 2012-2014, I concluded of the low assessment of policy environment, as well as the segments of corporate and universal banks with a positive trend and forecast on the basis of significant polynomial regression equations, and the relatively high level of competitiveness in the retail segment with a mixed trend and a negative outlook. The results are relevant to study macroeconomic frame-related parameters of the banking sector in Russia.

A methodology to identify banks with some monopolistic (supra-market) capacity

Ezrokh Yu.S. Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Management, Novosibirsk, Russian Federation ( ezroh@rambler.ru )

Journal: Finance and Credit, #15, 2015

Subject The subject of the research is the ability of some domestic credit institutions to do business with the efficiency (by key indicators) that is significantly higher than that of their competitor banks.
Objectives The objective of the study is to develop a methodology to identify banks with partially monopolistic (supra-market) capacities. The main objectives are to develop a theory explaining the reasons for significant differences in the key performance indicators of some Russian credit organizations, which are caused by the presence of supra-market capacities; to create an algorithm of major methodological approaches to empirical research in this sphere using the theoretical foundation; to develop and test the practical analysis techniques within each approach; to prepare a list of credit institutions having certain supra-market capacities; to establish classification criteria of banks with a monopolistic supra-market capacity; to propose measures for the banking system development in terms of constraining the supra-market capacities of individual banking groups.
Methods The methodology bases on the definition of key performance indicators of banks. Within the income approach, they include specific income from loan portfolios that include loans to individuals, legal entities and banks, and securities portfolios. Within the cost approach, they include specific cost of fund raising in the form of deposits, balances of on accounts of individuals and legal entities, inter-bank loans, bonds and other securities. Within the margin approach, they include specific net margins in the segment of financing of individuals and legal entities. I used ranking by reduced efficiency, which is characterized by a change in the key indicators. Based on the empirical calculations, I performed the final analysis.
Results On the basis of the empirical calculations, I justified a list of banks that have supra-market capacities, identified their sources, made proposals on the banking system development in terms of reducing the monopolistic supra-market capacities of individual groups of credit institutions.
Conclusions and Relevance The developed theory allows developing the existing approaches to the assessment of the competition level; the use of techniques within each approach enables to conduct empirical research; the results and findings contribute to effective development of the domestic banking system.
