Subject This article examines the competitive advantages of the region's forest industry development based on the smart specialization principles.
Objectives The article aims to define a new approach to the formation of the region's forest industry, taking into account the smart specialization principles and on this basis, identify the advantages of its development.
Methods For the study, we used a comparative analysis, grouping, systems approach, and comparison. Official statistics is the information base of the study.
Results The article develops a basis for the development of forestry specialization, which is not considered today at the regional level. It shows the priorities of this specialization necessary for the development of traditional and new competitive industries. The article also presents promising areas of low-grade wood and wood waste utilization, and the unique advantages of wood processing, taking into account the predominance of Siberian larch.
Conclusions The development of the region's forest industry is most effective, provided the advantages of species composition are considered, taking into account the production standards and processing technologies. Smart specialization, like the larch utilization case, shows that considering the advantages of this timber species, it is possible to produce fundamentally new forest products, which have a high consumer demand. A cluster structure of forestry production can create a maximum effect.
