Subject. Innovation as a factor in growing the competitive advantages of regions and countries. Objectives. Classification of regions based on the characteristics of their innovation potential, determining a typical innovation strategy for each group of regions. Methods. Systems analysis. Results. It has been established that for regions with advanced innovative development (for example, the Novosibirsk region), the priority is on innovations related to scientific and technical activities and the real sector of the economy. In regions with catching-up development, it is necessary to determine the main direction of innovative development. Conclusions. In conditions of differentiation of regions by industrial and scientific potential, an important task is to develop an innovation strategy that takes into account the specific characteristics of the region. Encouraging innovation activity becomes a significant direction of state policy.
