Subject. The region's ability to grow more by making the most of its own resources and the advantages of being close to foreign countries. Objectives. Description of the models for implementing the liminal potential that have developed in Russian practice, taking into account the diversity of geopolitical, economic, infrastructure, and sociocultural factors. Methods. Systems, structural-functional, and comparative analyses. Results. The basic models for realizing the limitrophe potential have been highlighted and described: the gateway model (realizing transit and logistics potential), the compensatory model (overcoming internal deficits through cross-border exchange), the integration-cooperation enclave model (forming cross-border production chains), and the protective-status model (developing the region as a geostrategic outpost). An institutional and legal framework has been defined for each model. Conclusions. The research results can be used by government authorities and local administrations to adjust spatial development strategies.
