Subject. The intensity of cross-border cooperation, and productive forces. Objectives. To develop an algorithm that allows determining the factors influencing the development of the innovative potential of Russia's border regions. Methods. Systems analysis, econometric modeling. Results. An approach has been developed for assessing the innovation potential of border areas, which also involves taking into account parameters such as academic mobility and informal channels of knowledge transfer. Specific forms of innovative activity characteristic of border areas are also taken into account. Conclusions. It is necessary to develop a differentiated policy that takes into account the current level of development of each border region and its specific competitive advantages. Investing in the development of transport and digital infrastructure will help reduce the impact of distance from the country's central regions.
