Subject. Development of the agro-industrial complex in the Republic of Buryatia, unlocking the economic potential of rural areas. Objectives. Assessment of opportunities for improving the profitability of cattle farming. Methods. Statistical and comparative analyses were used. Results. The specificity of the economy of the Republic of Buryatia lies in the high share of personal subsidiary plots in the production of agricultural products, while peasant (farmer) households account for the main part of the breeding stock of cattle. However, the growth of livestock in peasant and farm households does not lead to an adequate increase in meat production; dairy cattle breeding is also experiencing a deep crisis. The development of beef cattle breeding in the Republic of Buryatia is constrained by structural imbalances and low efficiency of the production and marketing chain. Conclusions. To realize the potential of the agro-industrial complex of the Republic of Buryatia, its technological modernization is necessary, and within peasant (farmer) households, cooperation should be developed.
