Subject. This article discusses the issues of economic inequality of the regions of Russia and the implementation of cross-border cooperation opportunities.
Objectives. The article aims to assess the main steps of regional policy implementation in modern Russia and analyze the transformation of the border regions’ significance in regional policy.
Methods. For the study, I used the general scientific research methods.
Results. The article finds that the interests of the border areas of Russia have become a priority in official documents starting from 2022, which was caused by the military-political crisis and the emergence of new threats.
