Subject. This article discusses the issues of sustainable development of remote areas. Objectives. The article aims to analyze the role of the oil and gas complex in ensuring the sustainable development of the regional economic system. Methods. For the study, I used the methods of logical and retrospective analyses. Results. The article defines the need to coordinate the interests of the State, the region and corporations in order to develop the production and processing of fuel and energy resources in the northern and Arctic areas. Conclusions. The conceptual approaches used to assess the socioeconomic development of regions poorly take into account the needs of the development of municipalities and the specifics of production activities in the northern latitudes. The synthesis of systems and integrated approaches to assessing sustainable development helps take into account all aspects of the impact of the oil and gas complex on the regional system.
