The impact of innovation zones on the socio-economic development of the region and the identification of the vulnerabilities of its innovative environment
Subject The article assesses the economic viability of the technology development special economic zone in the city of Tomsk for the period of 2011–2015. Objectives The article aims to analyze the impact of innovation zones on the socio-economic development of the region, and assess the performance of the Special Economic Zone Tomsk, to identify the weaknesses of the innovative climate in the Tomsk oblast. Methods For the study, we used the methods of extrapolation and correlation analysis with inclusion of a dummy variable using the EViews statistical software. Results The article highlights the characteristics and role of special economic zones in the economic development of the country and shows the performance of the zones. It identifies the problems of the further development of the Innovation Zone Tomsk and proposes a number of concrete measures to enhance the efficiency of the innovation zones. Conclusions The special economic zones of Russia in general, and the innovation zones in particular, need to improve their functioning. Most of the measures in this area will aim at improving the legislation on innovation zones, stimulating and supporting the innovation and investment activities of these territories.
