Importance The article examines trends in the socio-economic development of Russian regions in the midst of instability caused by the crisis and the slowdown in economic growth. Objectives The article aims to study the key aspects of social development of the region in the context of economic instability, as well as identify the most significant threats to sustainability affecting the socio-economic development of territorial entities. Methods For the study, we used the methods of comparative and statistical analyses. Results The analysis of the regional socio-economic system identifies the main aspects of development related to population policy, health, education, and the improvement of living standards. Conclusions In the context of economic instability in the Russian Federation, risks and threats to the social development of the regions have spread. The regions' sustainable development must be guided by the achievement of social goals and the well-being of people on the basis of high social standards. This implies the identification of key aspects of social development that will improve the standard of living of the population of the regional economic and social system.
