Importance The article deals with the foreign economic activity of the Russian Federation and its impact on the domestic industry. The Kostroma region's industry is a case study. Objectives The aim is to study the trends in the industry of the Kostroma region and the influence of foreign economic activity on it. Methods For the study, we used a correlation and regression analysis. Results We consider a number of indicators in dynamics: the volume of industrial production; share of industrial output in Gross Regional Product; number of companies in different industrial sectors; shipment volume; number of workers and their wages; the export, import and foreign trade turnover of the whole industry. We examined the intercommunication of the Kostroma region's industries and their development, and found a strong relationship between the economic activity and the socio-economic situation of the area, as well as the heterogeneity of effects of foreign economic activity on various sectors of industry in the region. Conclusions and Relevance We came to a conclusion that production of the enterprises of the region's wood and steel industries is mainly oriented towards exports; food, machinery and equipment, chemical, agricultural and other products are supplied to the region rather than for export; textile products of the Kostroma region are equally focused on exports and imports. The results of the research can be used by regional authorities in making decisions aimed at supporting industrial complex enterprises involved in global economic processes.
