In the article empirical research of influence of effect of economic diversification of the region on its economic efficiency is presented. The diversification can provide some protection of employment of the region in the conditions of cyclic recession. At the same time according to the theory of comparative advantages specialization causes economic benefits. Research is directed on empirical testing of theoretical concepts with reference to the Russian economy. The analysis on the basis of spatial data on subjects of Federation is carried out.
