Current level of investigation of sustainable development problems by domestic and foreign scientists has been analyzed in the paper. The authors propose a periodization of taking of sustainable development idea by world society since 1980s to the present day. Features of problems elaboration, targets, and criteria of sustainable development on the regional level are substantiated. Main problems of socio-economic and environmental development of the Republic of Tuva, depressive region near international border of Russia, are considered. Guidelines for economic mechanism development are proposed. The goals are orientation of republic economics to introduction of environmental technologies and preservation of culture of ethnos populated the republic. The authors substantiate a necessity of elaboration of Strategy of Sustainable Development of Tuva, directions of growth of economics and social sphere of the region, steps of getting on a sustainable development trajectory.
