Subject. This article focuses on the history and principles of the southern Siberian Federal District economic development. Objectives. The article aims to assess the development potential of the Krasnoyarsk Krai and Republic of Khakassia territories based on the formation of a polycentric-type agglomeration. Methods. For the study, we used the methods of comparison and analysis, statistical methods for processing economic data, as well as methods of historical analogies, calculation of the Thiel Index and the variation coefficient. Results. The article assesses the development prospects of the southern Siberian territories and points out that strategic industrial development needs to be carried out taking into account the experience of past years. Conclusions. The development of polycentric agglomerations makes it possible to preserve the network of settlements, address the problems of overcrowding in major cities and excessive concentration of industry in urban areas, and create sites and infrastructure for the development of large industrial complexes.
