Subject. This article focuses on the specifics of the socio-economic environment formation of Russia's border territories considering the influence of geography, migration, economic dependence, and national security.
Objectives. The article aims to identify and analyze the factors shaping the socio-economic environment of border areas and develop proposals for their sustainable development.
Methods. For the study, we used comprehensive analyses of statistics, regulations, the comparative method, approaches to territorial assessment systematization, as well as classification, grouping, modeling, and formalization of proposals for strategic planning.
Results. The article identifies significant regional differences. For each group, it proposes development strategies: digitalization, ecology, cultural cooperation, and sustainable development.
Conclusions. A comprehensive and coordinated approach can be helpful at the federal and regional levels for the sustainable development of Russia's border areas. The results are applicable in strategic management of border development, shaping public policy, and international cooperation.
