Subject. This article examines the historical development of free trade zones and advanced development territories in the international arena, analyzes positive and negative experiences in creating such zones, and examines methods for determining their effectiveness and attractiveness to investors. Objectives. The article aims to identify external factors and impulses that contribute to the development of advanced development territories in the international arena and their reformatting, creating new forms of economic cooperation between the State and the business community, and analyze the possibility of adopting international practices in creating special economic zones in the Russian Federation. Methods. For the study, I used a content analysis and economic modeling. Results. The article finds that the institution of advanced development territories is being actively introduced in the Russian Federation, however, under the conditions of sanctions pressure, it is necessary to look for other ways to attract foreign investment into the country and focus on successful practices implemented in foreign countries. Relevance. The results of the study can be used when planning the creation of new advanced development territories to avoid mistakes in planning such zones and implement the best international practices.
