Subject. Fish production and market in the Russian Federation; activities and financial condition of business entities engaged in fish production. Objectives. To assess the factors determining the current state and development trends of the fish market in the Russian Federation and the possibilities of meeting the needs of the country's population in fish. To analyze the financial condition of fish farms and the reasons for the deterioration of the solvency and stability of the financial position of business entities in this branch of agricultural production. Methods. In the course of the research, monographic, computational and constructive methods, as well as methods of financial coefficients, scoring analysis were used. Results. The analysis of fish market indicators in the Russian Federation was carried out, as a result of which it was revealed that the population's need for fish is not fully satisfied. Consequently, the dynamic and progressive development of fish farming and fisheries will contribute to ensuring the country's food security, as well as rural development. As a result of the analysis, a grouping of fish farms in the Republic of North Ossetia – Alania was obtained. The results of the study can be useful for specialists of regional and municipal ministries and departments of agriculture in the process of developing measures aimed at improving the efficiency of fish farms, as well as saturating food markets with fish products of domestic production. Conclusions. The indicators of the fish market in the Russian Federation are increasing dynamically. However, the population's need for fish is not being fully met. The production of freshwater fish in the total volume of fish farming products is extremely insignificant, but this area has a high potential in terms of ensuring food security of the state, since the Russian Federation is one of the leading countries in terms of world freshwater reserves.
