Subject. The average monthly salary in the Russian Federation. Objectives. Apply a differentiated approach to calculating the average salary based on the working population. Analyze the relationship between average earnings and other financial and economic indicators. Methods. General scientific research methods were used. Results. An approach is proposed to determine the nature of the average monthly salary depending on the category of employees in a particular field of activity. The analysis of currently existing research papers related to various options and methods for estimating the average monthly salary and other vital financial and economic indicators is given. Using the example of a Moscow university, the principle of distinguishing the average monthly salary with reference to the teaching position is shown. The threshold coefficients for the minimum wage, consumer salary and subsistence minimum have been clarified, characterizing their ratio in terms of profitability to the average monthly salary of the university's teaching staff. Various options for calculating wages are considered, depending on fluctuations in the total salary fund. Conclusions. The proposed methodology for clarifying the real nature of average and median payments by linking other vital economic and financial indicators of Russians and other practical results can be applied to workers in other industries, science and technology.
