Subject. Principles of segmentation of the semiconductor chip market and the distribution of individual segments in countries and regions of the world. Objectives. Analysis of changes in the ratio between segments of various types of semiconductor chips among countries and regions of the world under the influence of innovation, end-user demand and the geopolitical situation in the world over the past decade. Methods. General scientific methods of analysis based on open source data are used. Results. The analysis showed that the semiconductor chip markets are currently segmented by purpose (function performed in an electronic device), size (process technology), material, manufacturing technology, and end use. Semiconductor chip manufacturers usually specialize in one or two segments and, depending on competitiveness, focus on domestic or global markets. Conclusions. Currently, the semiconductor chip market is globalized and unevenly distributed among countries and regions of the world. The economic and political risks of disrupting the supply chains of semiconductor chips force all market players to look for opportunities to build a closed infrastructure for the production of basic types of semiconductor chips within their own country or friendly countries. For Russia, an additional challenge is to create a steady demand for semiconductor chips for industrial and consumer electronics.
