Subject. The article discusses the functioning of regional university systems for sustainable development of regions.
Objectives. The aim is to identify areas for optimization of the functioning of regional university systems in the interests of sustainable regional development.
Methods. The study rests on our own methodology for assessing the functioning of regional university systems, based on the index method. It employs correlation analysis and mathematical modeling.
Results. The functioning of regional university systems in the Ural Economic Region is insufficient and at the low level, there is an inter-functional imbalance. There exists a statistically significant relationship between functional indexes and key indicators of environmental, economic, and social spheres of sustainable development. The DEA method enabled to identify directions for optimization of individual functions of regional university systems. For five out of seven regions, they are related to the function of interaction with employers. We offered a set of measures to improve the functioning of regional university systems.
Conclusions. Increasing the level of functioning of the regional university system contributes to achieving the goals of sustainable development of the region.

Keywords: regional economy, sustainable development, region, regional university system, functioning of universities
