Subject. The article discusses industrial structure of regions, industrial production indices, investments in industrial development, labor supply in accordance with the strategic priorities of the industrial sector development in regions. Objectives. The focus is on studying the dynamics of various elements of the industrial sector of the subjects of the Russian Federation in the context of their role in ensuring technological sovereignty, taking into account the availability of investment resources. Methods. We employed spatial, analytical, comparative, system-dynamic approaches, methods of statistical analysis, graphical constructions, synthesis, and comparison. Results. We analyzed various aspects of industrial development of Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk Oblasts that included in the Ural macroregion and belong to old industrial regions. We considered comparative dynamics of industrial production in the said oblasts in comparison with national averages, their share in the country's industry, and production indices for certain types of industry. Furthermore, we examined the dynamics of GRP and industrial production, depreciation of fixed assets, the structure of regional investments, trends in investment per person employed in industry. Conclusions. Further industrial development requires attracting investments from various sources to upgrade fixed assets, increase employment and attractiveness of industry, and diversify the industrial complex to reduce dependence on external shocks.
