Importance The article deals with the dependence of the domestic economy on foreign supplies of materials, components, software and equipment for the operation of knowledge-intensive industries.
Objectives The aim is a comprehensive analysis of the Russian economy's dependence on imports, development of proposals to reduce the susceptibility of science-based enterprises to external factors.
Methods The study draws on the systems approach and methods of economic analysis.
Results The paper reveals the main types of threats to innovative development of the domestic economy. They include threats in the sphere of production management, production of manufacturing equipment, and threats associated with supplies of materials and components by foreign manufacturers. The prevalence of foreign equipment, materials, instruments, components, and software is explained by low demand of domestic consumers for these products. For a number of reasons, Russian manufacturers are not yet able to provide them with quality products.
Conclusions The paper offers measures to spur the demand through plant leasing, subsidies to manufacturers and consumption of products manufactured by domestic science-intensive enterprises. Particular attention should be paid to financing the research and development projects aimed at new generation technologies.
