The article states that stirring up the financial market of the country and building over the long term an international financial center in its territory is one of priority areas of the economic development strategy of the Russian Federation. The most developed sector of the Russian financial market at the present stage is the market of banking services, which could become the "locomotive" of the financial market. However, there exists conventional wisdom that business competition is the most important factor of business expansion and efficiency increase. Competition induces constructive actions in the market and offering consumers a wider range of products and services at more attractive prices and of the best quality. This, in its turn, promotes an increased production performance and redistribution of financial resources to the most competitive organizations. The author emphasizes that competition in the course of production and sale of goods and services is a fundamental element of the market mechanism of economy regulation. Competition in banking is one of the types of competition in the financial market. Banks compete for financial assets and customers with all participants of the financial market, including non-bank organizations. Creating conditions to develop competition in the market of banking services is one of key factors of effective realization of the common economic space principle and free movement of financial services. The author stresses that competition in banking is a new phenomenon in the Russian Federation. The competition-related issues have become popular only during the last two decades of one and a half centuries of Russian banking community development. The study addresses the specifics of competition in the market of banking services that are typical of our country, provides a definition of interbank competition, and presents a scorecard of interbank competition rating in the regional market on the case of the Samara region. The author has analyzed the State regulation of interbank relations as a factor influencing competition scale, and calculated the influence of the most significant parameters of the financial market on interbank competition to identify the key areas of State regulation in banking environment.
