Modern transformations of the Russian banking sector

Mazhigova E.M. Chechen State University, Grozny, Chechen Republic, Russian Federation ( Lmalik@chesu.ru )

Journal: Finance and Credit, #6, 2018

Subject The article investigates prospects for the modern banking system development that are largely associated with the transformation of intermediation functions. Financial intermediaries are extremely important, as they perform such key functions in the economy as transformation of capital, terms and risks.
Objectives The purpose is to describe modern characteristics of the banking system transformation, taking into account the function performed by financial intermediaries in reproduction processes.
Methods Using the structural and functional analysis, I review new trends in banking intermediation with regard to changes in liabilities structure, profitability of the banking sector, number of credit institutions and their branches, fulfillment of capital adequacy requirements, and asset size.
Results Analytical and theoretical results of the study show that the structure of the national banking sector will be governed by processes of increasing the level of capitalization of banks through mergers and acquisitions against the backdrop of small local players exiting the market. The findings may help develop new technological requirements to the structure of banking activities on changes in domestic reproduction.
Conclusions Priorities of modern transformation of the banking sector in the national economy in the context of changes in intermediation functions will be determined by new organizational, managerial and financial technologies, rather than by profitability criteria.

Mazhigova E.M. Chechen State University, Grozny, Chechen Republic, Russian Federation ( Lmalik@chesu.ru )

Journal: Finance and Credit, #5, 2018

Subject In the transforming economy, the role of bank capital and financial intermediaries becomes increasingly systemic, as they can significantly reduce transaction costs and risks. However, modern commercial banks have stopped meeting the needs of expanded reproduction in the formation of mass channels for transformation of savings into investment.
Objectives The purpose of the study is to identify priorities of banking activities in the disintermediation processes that enable to solve innovation and investment problems of Russian reproduction.
Methods Using the analysis, I investigate new trends in financial intermediation and show the inability to provide for investment financing of all economic sectors. On the basis of systems approach, I define those parts of the structure and organization of the national economy, where expanded reproduction and concentration of financial resources are required.
Results I propose to define areas and organization of bank lending to extended reproduction on the basis of vertical cooperation of innovation-oriented small and medium-sized enterprises with large companies. The findings may be useful for developing the new technological bases of banking in the modern economy.
Conclusions To effectively develop banking activities, it is advisable to apply measures to increase the availability of bank lending based on technological cooperation of producers. It will ensure the system's effective adaptation to challenges of the disintermediation process in the financial sector, and enhance the banking sector's function in the modern Russian reproduction.

Contradictions between the use of credit resources and investment needs in the Russian reproduction

Mazhigova E.M. Chechen State University, Grozny, Chechen Republic, Russian Federation ( arsen.tatuev@mail.ru )

Journal: Finance and Credit, #7, 2018

Importance In modern conditions, innovative factors of development become the defining components of socio-economic transformation. However, the Russian lending structure contradicts the interests of innovative development, although it reflects the needs of the main segments of the national economy.
Objectives The study aims to define areas of modernization in banking activities, proceeding from the challenges of modern technologies that enable to solve the accumulated contradictions between the reproductive investment needs and lending practices.
Methods The analysis rests on the present structure of corporate lending by economic activity, changes in the level of past due debt, weighted average interest rates, and the structure of credit turnover, changes in the capital and the banking sector multiplier indicating a low level of attractiveness of bank lending for debt financing of investment projects in the real sector.
Results Analytical and theoretical results of the study show that the banking system does not meet investment requirements of extended reproduction and requires significant internal changes. The findings may be useful for developing new technological foundations of banking under the current socio-economic transformation.
Conclusions To effectively develop the blockchain technology, efforts should be concentrated at the State level through creating integrated platforms enabling to unite the actions of participants from a variety of local structures. In this case, it will be possible to combine the advantages of the State and the private sector in a single technological chain of investment and financial support to expanded reproduction.
