Journal: Economic Analysis: Theory and Practice, #22, 2015

Importance The problem of assessing the impact of financial factors on the value of mergers and acquisitions of pharmaceutical companies is very important due to the patent collapse in the pharmaceutical products market, a reduction in the productivity of the new blockbuster drugs creation, and the price pressure on the industry by national governments, which increases during post-crisis economic recovery.
Objectives The purpose of the paper is a theoretical formalization and econometric modeling of the structure and influence of financial factors on the value of pharmaceutical companies in the processes of their mergers and acquisitions in the market.
Methods In this paper, using econometric methods, we tested four hypotheses about the impact of financial parameters on the value of mergers and acquisitions in the pharmaceutical market. Results The results of the analysis confirmed three of the four hypotheses at 5% level of significance and 0.843 determination factor (R-squared).
Conclusions and Relevance Based on the findings, we have formulated recommendations for management related to consideration of the value and quality of total assets of the target company and its net profit in the processes of corporate integration of pharmaceutical companies. The results of the research are valuable, as they enable pharmaceutical companies' executives to exercise strategic management of modern business and increase investment appeal and competitiveness in the global market through the manipulation of the identified key cost factors of M&A transactions.

Journal: Economic Analysis: Theory and Practice, #43, 2014

The paper proposes a methodological approach to value assessment of a pharmaceutical company on the basis of the economic value added (EVA) concept. The concept enables not only to fix the current values of a company's assets, investment costs and expectations of its investors, but also to take into account the macro-economic situation in the market and the specifics of the pharmaceutical industry. The identified specifics of the global pharmaceutical market, such as high concentration in the industry, a high degree of capital-intensive and science-driven innovation, low price elasticity of demand for major products, the blockbuster and generic business models domination in the market, and highly regulated industry environment enabled to formulate a hypothesis of the research about positive impact of a pharmaceutical company's R&D costs and the cost of the patents and goodwill that are recorded on the balance sheet, on the company's market value. The regression analysis based on the sample of Top-20 largest global pharmaceutical companies of the industry for 2013 enabled to build and evaluate several regression models, where EVA indicator acted as a dependent variable, and the components forming NOPAT, IC and WACC, acted as explanatory variables. The analysis results provided support for the hypothesis at the 5% significance level at the determination factor of 0.7148. Having an effect on the identified key cost factors, a pharmaceutical company's management is able to exercise strategic control over the modern business, to increase investment attractiveness and competitiveness in the global market.

Journal: National interests: priorities and security, #10, 2017

Importance The article examines key aspects of energy security as the fundamental element of the total security. The research focuses on the energy security and views it as a component of the overall and national security during the geopolitical and civilizational confrontation.
Objectives We examine key approaches to defining the energy security, identifying basic models of energy security and the most significant threats amid the geopolitical confrontation.
Methods The research relies upon methods of historic and logic unity and specific political cases (event analysis, case study, expert assessment method).
Results Studying the existing concepts of the energy market and approaches to review it, we formulate theoretical principles and applied aspects for its diversification during the geopolitical confrontation of the civilizations. We determine that Russia shall prioritize basic vectors in its foreign policy and trade through the equal interaction with certain countries or their regional unions and through international agreements and organizations.
Conclusions and Relevance Considering the very tough geopolitical confrontation, the economic efficiency, national sovereignty and defense directly depend on the energy security. That is why the energy sector should be totally controlled by the State, for the transfer of control in this strategic area may derail the national security entirely. The findings can be used to prepare general and special academic courses on global and domestic economics, energy resources and energy consumption, conduct political researches and support activities of governmental authorities.

Balashov A.I. St. Petersburg School of Economics and Management, National Research University Higher School of Economics, St. Petersburg, Russian Federation ( aleksey.i.balashov@gmail.com )

Journal: National interests: priorities and security, #34, 2015

Importance Modern threats to military security shape new requirements to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, their organizational structure, technical equipment, military professionalism and military and economic basis. Meanwhile, accumulated negative trends in the Russian economy substantially cut Russia's military and economic capabilities, thereby necessitating a comprehensive analysis of the military potential and economic constraints of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
Objectives The research aims at analyzing the potential and combat readiness of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation to repel contemporary military threats and tackle economic constraints of the Russian military security arising from the state of the military-industrial complex, military professionalism and mobilization reserves.
Methods The methodology constitutes a structural analysis of the Armed Forces and the military-defense complex and relies upon statistical data and expert judgments on the Russian Army reform and implementation of the State armament programs.

Results As the research shows, after the Armed Forces have received new combat gear and military equipment, implemented IT and modernized reconnaissance and target market systems, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation significantly approached the standard of network-centric armed forces. However, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have not yet reached full compliance with requirements of new military operations due to pending technological retrofitting and professional advancement of the Armed Forces personnel as a result of budgetary restrictions of the Russian economy.
     Conclusions and Relevance
Following the research, I provide my recommendations for modernizing the Russian economy, strengthening economic, humanitarian and other factors of soft power that lay the basis for ensuring the national interests worldwide.
