Importance The article discusses the problems of poverty and social well-being of the population that are becoming the main objective of sustainable development of the regions. Objectives The article aims to study the level of poverty and well-being of the population in the regions of the Russian Federation and identify the most significant threats and sustainability factors affecting the socio-economic development of the territorial entities. Methods For the study, I used the methods of logical, comparative, economic and statistical analyses, and the official statistics. Results The article shows the most significant threats to the socio-economic development of territorial entities and proposes certain measures to improve the standard of living of the population. Conclusions In recent years, the standard of living and well-being of the population has declined noticeably in Russia, and poverty has spread. The situation in the country carries risks of social instability on a regional and national scale. The sustainable development of the territories is associated with the satisfaction of human needs, and technological development results in increased social welfare and prosperity for the population.
