Importance The article deals with the issues of demographic security of the northern regions of Russia. Objectives The article aims to analyze the sources of population formation, problems in maintaining the demographic security, highlight key issues in the region's demographic development, and identify the main directions of regional demographic policy. Methods To describe the current trends in the population development of the northern region, regional specificity of demographic processes, and the key challenges in the development of demographic potential, I used demographic analysis methods and the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic as a case study. Results I have analyzed the major trends in demographic potential of the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic, highlighted the problems and grounded the priorities of the regional population policy. The results can be used by the executive authorities when developing socio-economic development policy papers and regional demographic policy measures. Conclusions In the population reproduction of the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic, there are certain demographic security threats. To create conditions for the elimination of barriers impeding life expectancy should be a priority of regional demographic policy.
