Importance The research examines a set of theoretical, methodological and practical approaches to elaborating a mechanism for strategic management of food resources and considers the regional specifics.
     Objectives The research pursues the developing theoretical provisions and articulating methodological and practical recommendations to form a mechanism for strategic management of food resources. We investigate methodological aspects of improving the strategic management mechanism in relation to forming and using food resources; analyze a system for managing the formation and use of food resources in the region; substantiate conceptual provisions of forming the regional food supply strategy.
     Methods The research relies upon general and special methods of scientific research, i.e. abstraction and logic methods, synthesis, techniques of systems, structural and functional analyses, modeling, methods of balance sheet, economic statistics, mathematical and economic method, graphical method, etc.
     Results We propose our own approaches to formulating the regional food strategy, which would streamline the elaboration and implementation of practical measures to improve the competitiveness of food resources, develop the agricultural food potential of the Republic of Mordovia.
     Conclusions and Relevance The current socio-economic development reasonably necessitates special-purpose programs for producing and using food resources of various regions, considering the product differentiation and consumption, intensity of cross-regional and intergovernmental food exchange and other critical factors and trends. The outcome of the research may prove useful for educational purposes in higher schools that specialize in top and middle managers' training.
