Importance The article estimates the economic situation in the market of agricultural products as a result of the embargo on the import of food products from a number of foreign countries imposed by the President of the Russian Federation. Objectives The aim of the paper is to examine the prospects for the realization of the program of import substitution of food products in the Krasnodar Krai and to identify the areas of stabilization of the situation in the Russian food market through supporting the local farmers oriented to satisfy the consumer demand as full as possible and take up freed niches in the domestic food market. Methods The study is based on official statistics. Results We explored modern modalities and priorities for the development of agricultural enterprises of the region in terms of their participation in the program of import substitution. We specified the main product groups on the basis of the import substitution potential. We analyzed the structure and dynamics of the crop sector as one of the priority areas of agriculture of the region. We propose certain measures of State support to the Kuban agricultural producers under the long-term development strategies. Conclusions and Relevance We conclude on the need for the concerted actions of the domestic business, finance and government leading to good prospects for the implementation of the import substitution program and changes in the structure of the domestic economy as well.
