Adaptive formation of a remote area's industry (the Republic of Dagestan case study)

Importance The article considers the problems of formation of the structure of regions on the basis of an adaptive approach to restructuring of economic relations of industrial enterprises of the Republic of Dagestan.
     Objectives
The purpose of the paper is to define the sustainable forms of economic organization in the region, allowing the region to embark on a path of development after economic recession and stagnation.
     Methods In this work, I use statistical, expert and factual materials on the economy of peripheral regions, which help developing a conceptual approach to the development of industry structure and management of a peripheral (cross-border) region. The study is based on the fundamental scientific works of domestic and foreign scientists and experts in the theory and practice of regional economy.
     Results I have specified the border region's characteristic geopolitical and natural-resource factors and conditions that allow businesses to choose the activities that would support the release of competitive products and the profitability. I have developed conceptual approaches to the transition from the existing structure of the economy, based on the limited spatial orientation of economic links, to the centric structure, based on multipolar diversified linkages. In addition, I give recommendations for chief executives, investors and businessmen to assess the capacity of a stable receiving State orders helping maintain stable relations, the technical staff qualification level and hope for a stable future.
     Conclusions and Relevance The proposed approach to the adaptive development of the peripheral region's industry on the basis of competitive territorial features will foster a sustainable development of the economy of the region as a whole.
