Importance At present, the role of the forest industry in the transition to the green (renewable) economy assumes importance. Therefore, the study of the state of wood work and timber industry in the forest industry, as well as the identification of inherent characteristics at the regional level, is also of particular relevance.
Objectives Goal of research is to define the place of the wood work and timber industry in the forest complex of the Republic of Komi, and identifying the contribution of timber processing in the industrial production of the region. The paper also aims to study the role of the analyzed territory in socio-economic development, to identify the problems which limit the industry's effective development.
Methods To determine the role of the timber processing industry in the timber industry complex of the Republic of Komi, to identify its place in the socio-economic development of the region and to assess the effectiveness of functioning, I have used the methods of systemic approach, comparative analysis, expert opinions, mathematical statistics and econometrics. The analysis enabled to identify the leading role of the timber processing industry in the woodland complex of the region; to define the social significance of timber processing, which plays a town-forming role; to emphasize the particular status of small forest business for rural remote areas of the Republic of Komi. The article also defines the main problems of the industry functioning, which resulted in low efficiency of wood raw material processing, imbalances of commodity and industrial structure, a high share of exports of semi-finished products, insufficient volume of tax revenues.
Results I underline that the timber processing industry is in a position to become the main area of the timber processing industry development in the Komi Republic. Enterprises of the regional timber processing can make a far greater contribution to the socio-economic development of the region through replenishment of budgets and incomes generation of industry's employees.
Conclusions and Relevance It is necessary to solve the main problems of the industry: backward primary sawmilling, undeveloped added-value wood processing, unprofitability of some enterprises, and stock structure imbalance.

Keywords: regional timber-wood complex, European region, woodwork and timber industry efficiency, sectoral structure, domestic consumption, exports, financial sustainability
