Importance As part of the relationship between the center and regions in a multinational State like Russia, the legitimacy of power rests upon a variety of regional, ethnic, sociocultural interests. It complicates the origination of mostly recognized values.
Objectives I identify the rationale and mechanisms for legitimizing the regional authority, and causes of its delegitimization in the North Caucasian Federal District as part of a new election cycle.
Methods The research applies general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, statistical methods, systems, structural and functional approaches.
Results If members of the society get a real assistance and aid to address their daily issues and protect their interests so that well elaborated governmental and managerial solutions are put into practice, this will alleviate the social tensions in the North Caucasian society and increase the legitimacy of the regional power.
Conclusions and Relevance I determined factors that influence the local population and contribute to distinctive attitude of the public in recognizing and supporting regional power. They may include the departure from direct elections. This trend constrains constitutional rights of citizens, undermines trust in democratic ideals and procedures, and widens the gap between the power-that-be and public. It also makes a considerable part of the population dissatisfied with their socio-economic position and various forms of corruption.
