Importance The article provides the rationale for qualifying the economic security of an industry as a separate economic category. I devise a mechanism for its evaluation with the evidence from the timber industry of the Russian Federation and identify sectoral threats as one of the steps in the process.
Objectives The research determines the importance of sectoral threats as part of the regional view of the national economy. I forge a generic mechanism for evaluating the sectoral economic security, and outline a set of economic security criteria for the timber industry. The article also presents a classification of threats to the economic security of Russia’s timber industry by analyzing sectoral indicators.
Methods This research relies upon methods of analytical, dynamic and graphic interpretation of scientific and statistical data.
Results Although the timber industry accounts for 2.9 percent of total commercial production, without being regarded as a strategic sector of the Russian industrial production, it is very dispersed geographically and influence the economic security of regions and the State. However, the unbiased and reasonable evaluation of the economic security requires a mechanism reflecting its formation. First and foremost, sectoral threats should be identified and classified.
Conclusions and Relevance I conclude fundamental researches need to be carried out for articulating the concept of sectoral economic security. Illustrating the timber industry, I showcase that possible threats vary and have a different impact. Hence, economic security can be evaluated if threats, their impact and possible consequences are determined and ranked.
