Importance The article discusses risk factors, threats and prospects in food security of the Russian Federation as an integral part of the high level and quality of living.
Objectives The research represents a comprehensive evaluation of the food sovereignty as the most important component of Russia’s food security as a whole, and self-sufficiency with food in the Republic of Mordovia.
Methods The methodological framework comprises general scholarly methods (scientific abstraction, historic and logic unity, analysis and synthesis) and specific methods of economic security evaluation (comparison of real and threshold indicators of economic security).
Results Having evaluated food security of the Republic of Mordovia, we conclude that the population did not face so serious challenges in accessing food products as before. Economic affordability of food products should be improved with the guarantee of their quality.
Conclusions and Relevance In modern Russia a growth in agricultural products is the most critical driver of the export potential and competitiveness of the agri-food segment. Whereas the export of eco-friendly food products grows, Russia can find an alternative source of federal fiscal revenue. The findings can be used to substantiate priorities of the economic policy of the State (constituent entity of the Russian Federation).
