Importance The research presents a systems analysis of key global and national challenges to the Russian and foreign air transport and the Russian aircraft engineering. The article formulates possible strategical paths for developing the Russian aircraft engineering and goals of the national aviation science.
Objectives We set up requirements to powerful aviation equipment that would allow for implementing key global and national objectives in air transport.
Methods Describing the current state of the Russian aircraft engineering and aviation science, we used principles of SWOT analysis. To assess requirements to powerful aviation equipment, we applied economic and mathematical modeling.
Results We identified the difference between development of civil aviation in countries with low and high affordability of air flights and intensity of air traffic. The article demonstrates how the existing conditions influence possible strategies for development of the Russian aircraft industry and what criteria new equipment should meet to become competitive in the global market. Considering scenarios of the aviation industry development, we formulated and substantiated general goals for aviation science as well. The article describes strengths of the Russian aviation science and methods to bring existing opportunities into life.
Conclusions and Relevance Considering the specifics of challenges to the Russian civil aviation and aircraft engineering, it is necessary to devise unique technologies that would satisfy contradictory requirements, which are not typical of aviation in advanced nations. This is a favorable opportunity for the Russian applied aviation science.
