Importance The article considers the concept of credit limits and the mechanism of their formation.
Objectives The aim of the study is a theoretical and methodological substantiation of the credit limit definition.
Methods The research methodology draws on a systems-integrated approach to the credit limit analysis, fundamental and applied knowledge in the sphere of theory and practice of credit.
     Results
The article presents a unique interpretation of credit limits, identifies basic approaches to their analysis, determines a system of coordinates of credit limits, and highlights its elements. We describe the specific features of credit limits formation under modern conditions, and propose to forecast credit limits based on their optimization principle.
Conclusions We have considered credit limits within the credit theory as an element of credit relations, and as a result of credit facility functioning. These limits are subject to the mechanism of implementing credit facility functions and bank functions. In addition, the limits are subject to expansion or narrowing, depending on numerous factors that affect the implementation of the function of credit and lending principles. Under financial instability, the regulation of credit limits at the macro- and microlevel is an important factor of increasing the banking system stability and the economy as a whole.

Keywords: credit function, credit limits, credit expansion, lending principles, credit mechanism
